The portrayal of Felix Leiter by Rik Van Nutter is of a more serious nature than that of Cec Linder or Jack Lord. This style is more suited to Thunderball where Leiter has a sense of urgency for finding the atomic bombs with no room for comical gags. Leiter has good contacts with the Coast Guard and is able to pilot a helicopter.

In Licence to Kill David Hedison reprises his role as Felix Leiter. Enjoyably Leiter gets more involved in the action bringing down Franz Sanchez at the end of the pre-title sequence. Leiters role in Licence To Kill is cut short when his wife, Della Churchill is killed, and he is fed to a shark - courtesy of Sanchez. Seriously injured, this is the main factor that causes Bond to chase Sanchez contrary to orders from M.

Summary: Since Felix Leiter is unable to assist Bond in his missions due to his shark-related injuries, a new American sidekick was assigned to Bond. Jack Wade is a middle aged man who has had many love interests, enjoys gardening and has a rose shaped tattoo over his right butt cheek that says "Muffy". His response to it is: "...Third wife, long story...". Bond seems to have a low opinion of Wade and thinks of him as more of a resource than a friend. In Tomorrow Never Dies, when Bond shows up in his naval uniform and Wade is in a flower shirt you can see the disgust on Bond¹s face.

Leiter went dormant in EON films until 1986, when Terry showed up. He did not have a large role, but longtime fans felt comfort in once again hearing from Bond's opposite number.

A former CIA and one-time DEA agent who acts as Bond's primary liaison through several films.

Jack Lord (appeared in Dr No)
- John Joseph Patrick Ryan or better known by his stage name Jack Lord was an American actor who first portrayed the role of CIA agent Felix Leiter in Dr No. The producers didn't ask him to reprise the role of Leiter since they felt that having the same actor over and over might upstage Sean Connery's dominance as the leading man. He later became well known as Steve McGarrett on the hit TV show "Hawaii Five-O". Alledgedly, Lord's demand for equal billing and higher salary also influenced the decision to change the character.

- Cec Linder was a Canadian actor (of Polish descent) who was famous for playing American characters in various films and television shows

Felix's role in Licence to kill was central to the plot : he is shown as Bond's best friend, Bond is his Best Man at his wedding, his maiming at the hands of Sanchez (he was fed to sharks and lost one leg) and his wife's murder on their honeymoon cause Bond's quest for vengeance. Bond finishes off Sanchez with his groomsman's gift, a Della and Felix 'lighter'.
The Felix Leiter character would disappear during the Brosnan era to be replaced with Jack Wade (Joe Don Baker, who also played villain Brad Whitaker in The Living Daylights). Presumably, this was done to avoid dealing with having to explain the events of the shark attack on Leiter and his subsequent amputations in License to Kill. Leiter returns completely ambulatory in Casino Royale.

- Jeffrey Wright's first film role was in "Presumed Innocent" and he's never looked back. He won a Tony and Emmy Award for his role in "Angels in America," starred in "Basquiat," as well as roles in "Shaft," "The Manchurian Candidate," "Broken Flowers," "Syriana," and "Lady in the Water." He reprised the role of Felix Leiter in Quantum Of Solace 2008 "A brother from Langley", is the reference to his CIA background.
