Synopsis
CASINO ROYALE is based on Ian Fleming's novel of the same name. Published in 1953, it was the first book in his James Bond series. EON Productions' Casino Royale produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will mark the introduction of Daniel Craig as legendary secret agent, 007. Martin Campbell is directing this film, the 21st in the 44 year franchise.

Casino Royale introduces JAMES BOND before he holds his license to kill. But Bond is no less dangerous, and with two professional assassinations in quick succession, he is elevated to "00" status.

Bond's first 007 mission takes him to Madagascar where he is to spy on a terrorist, MOLLAKA (Sebastien Foucan). Not everything goes to plan and Bond decides to investigate, independently of MI6, in order to track down the rest of the terrorist cell. Following a lead to the Bahamas, he encounters DIMITRIOS (Simon Abkarian) and his girlfriend, SOLANGE (Caterina Murino). He learns that Dimitrios is involved with LE CHIFFRE (Mads Mikkelsen), banker to the world's terrorist organizations. Secret Service intelligence reveals that Le Chiffre is planning to raise money in a high-stakes poker game in Montenegro at Le Casino royale. MI6 assigns 007 to play against him, knowing that is Le Chiffre loses, it will destroy his organisation.

M (Judi Dench) places Bond under the watchful eye of the beguiling VESPER LUND (Eva Green). At first skeptical of what value Vesper can provide, Bond's interest in her deepens as they brave danger together and even torture at the hands of Le Chiffre.

In Montenegro, Bond allies himself with MATHIS (Giancarlo Giannini) MI6's local field agent, and FELIX LEITER (Jeffrey Wright) who is representing the interests of the CIA. The marathon game proceeds with dirty tricks and violence, raising the stakes beyond blood money and reaching a terrifying climax.

James Bond's first "007" mission leads him to Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), banker to the world's terrorists. In order to stop him, and bring down the terrorist network, Bond must beat Le Chiffre in a high-stakes poker game at Casino Royale. Filmen baseras på Ian Flemings roman med samma namn som publicerades 1953. Casino Royale introducerar James Bond innan han får sin "license to kill", men han är inte mindre farlig för det. Med två professionella lönnmord i bakfickan befordras han till 00-status.

Bonds första 007-uppdrag för honom till Madagaskar, där han har i uppdrag att spionera på terroristen Mollaka (Sebastien Foucan). Allt går inte enligt planen, och Bond beslutar sig för att undersöka, oberoende av MI6, för att spåra resten av terroristcellerna.

Secret Services avslöjar att Le Chiffre planerar att satsa pengar i ett pokerspel med höga insatser i Montenegro på Le Casino Royale. MI6, som vet att Le Chiffres organisation krossas om han förlorar, skickar 007 på uppgiften att spela mot honom.

M (Judi Dench) sätter Bond under Vesper Lynds (Eva Green) vakande öga. Till en början är Bond skeptisk till hur mycket Vesper kan bistå med, men hans intresse för henne ökar när de tappert möter faror – och även tortyr av Le Chiffre – tillsammans.

I CASINO ROYALE, som är den 21:a James Bond-filmen, debuterar Daniel Craig som agent 007. Filmen hade inspellningsstart i Tjeckien måndagen den 30 januari 2006. Producerad för Eon Productions av Michael G. Wilson och Barbara Broccoli och regisserad av Martin Campbell.

CASINO ROYALE följer James Bonds tidiga karriär. Hans första uppdrag som ”dubbelnolla” leder honom till Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), bankir för världens terrorister. Bondfans över hela världen hade under många år framfört önskemål om att Eon skulle göra en "riktig" Bondfilm baserad på Ian Flemings första Bondbok Casino Royale.
Som vi minns hade Fleming på ett (alltför) tidigt stadium sålt filmrättigheterna till den här boken, med följd att Casino Royale inte ingick i det paket Bondböcker som Saltzman & Broccoli köpte filmrättigheterna till 1961. Columbia gjorde så småningom film av Casino Royale 1967 med David Niven som Bond och med Peter Sellers som Evelyn Tremble. Det är en ökänt usel film som var tänkt som en parodi på Bond och som i våra dagar mest fungerat som en förlaga för Austin Powers-filmerna.

Columbia köptes senare av Sony. I samband med en juridisk uppgörelse mellan MGM och Sony 2000 överfördes slutligen rättigheterna till Casino Royale till MGM, som därigenom samlade alla Bondrättigheter under sitt eget tak. Därmed kunde fansen börja hoppas på att bokens intrig skulle kunna dyka upp i en kommande Bondfilm.

Den tjugonde Bondfilmen, Die Another Day, hade blivit en stor kassasuccé, den mest inkomstbringande Bondfilmen så långt.
Alla räknade med att Pierce Brosnan skulle återkomma som 007.
Det fanns inte direkt något skäl för filmbolaget att byta ut honom efter fyra framgångsrika Bondfilmer. Brosnan fick ett muntligt löfte om en optionsrätt på "Bond 21", en nyhet som gick ut i media.
Men något hände.
Planeringen av nästa Bondfilm drog ut på tiden och det kom egentligen inga konkreta nyheter, vilket lämnade fältet fritt för massor av spekulationer. Andra skådespelare började pekas ut som ny 007 i brittisk press, samtidigt som visst mediafokus plötsligt började läggas vid Brosnans ålder. Var det dags för en yngre Bond nu?

Våren 2004 började det komma allt mer envisa uppgifter som hävdade att Brosnan inte skulle få förnyat kontrakt som Bond. Förhandlingarna inför den nya filmen ansågs kärva. Hade Brosnan begärt för högt gage? Ingen visste riktigt. Brosnan själv började uttrycka tydlig irritation i intervjuer. Han ville ha klara besked från Eon om hur det skulle bli med Bondfilmen.
I Bahamas, under inspelningarna av filmen After the Sunset, fick Brosnan ett telefonsamtal från producenterna, där de meddelade att de inte tänkte förnya hans kontrakt och att de tänkte föryngra Bond i nästa film.
Brosnan blev sur, dels för att ha fått sparken och dels för sättet han meddelats på.
I oktober 2004 stod det klart att Brosnan var ute ur bilden. Det blev sedan en hel del bittra känslor i intervjuer under hösten och vintern 2004. Oavsett vilka andra filmer Brosnan försökte marknadsföra fick han bara frågor om Bond från hela världens media. Samtidigt var det påtagligt tyst från Eon. Det kom inga officiella besked, förutom att nästa Bondfilm skjutits upp till 2006.

Under 2004 genomfördes dessutom en jätteaffär när Sony köpte hela filmbolaget MGM för 4.8 miljarder dollar. Affären hade föregåtts av förhandlingar under mer än ett halvår. Detta fördröjde givetvis planeringen av den nya Bondfilmen.

Spekulationerna kring den nya Bondfilmen gick nu upp i absolut högvarv. Vem skulle bli ny 007? Det fanns ingen självklar kandidat, även om mediafavoriter som Clive Owen och Hugh Jackman ofta nämndes.
Eon har alltid haft traditionen att inte låta Bondskådespelaren få procent på filmens intäkter. Vinstandelar är något som ibland är vanligt beträffande andra storfilmer. Eons ovilja att gå med på detta kan vara orsaken till att flera av de mest kända kandidaterna till Bondrollen verkade vara måttligt intresserade av den.

3 februari 2005 meddelade Eon att den nya Bondfilmen skulle heta Casino Royale och baseras på Ian Flemings första Bondbok. Samtidigt blev det känt att Martin Campbell skulle regissera filmen. Campbell hade tidigare regisserat GoldenEye 1995.
Campbell var mycket intresserad av att vara med och föryngra Bond. Han propagerade öppet för att Eon borde välja en helt okänd skådespelare som ny 007.

Hur skulle då Bond föryngras? Eon gjorde klart att den nya filmen inte skulle bli en som utspelar sig i en historisk dåtid, men att vi i filmen ska få se hur Bond formas till en hårdare personlighet och hur han blir den agent vi känner till. Inledningsvis kommer vi att få se hur Bond skaffar sig sin 00-status.

Manusförfattare är än en gång Neal Purvis & Robert Wade. Deras manus har sedan bearbetats av Paul Haggis, Oscarbelönad 2006 för Crash.

Varken Q eller Moneypenny finns med i manuset. Bond kommer inte att ha några tekniska Q-prylar - inga osynliga bilar alltså. Men Aston Martin bidrar med nya modellen DBS.

Det har sagts att första tredjedelen av manuset är "original" medan resten i princip följer Flemings bok. Det är första gången på flera decennier som en Bondfilm kommer att innehålla stora delar av en originalintrig av Ian Fleming.

Givetvis måste bokens mer än 50 år gamla intrig moderniseras, men de grundläggande dragen ska finnas kvar.
I Flemings bok konfronteras 007 med skurken Le Chiffre, och Bonds uppdrag är att besegra honom i ett stort parti chemin de fer vid Casino Royale, och därigenom vinna en stor summa pengar av Le Chiffre.
Filmen ska också innehålla en sådan spelsekvens på Casino Royale, men man har bytt ut chemin de fer mot det idag mer kända spelet poker.
Boken innehåller också en ökänd tortyrscen, då le Chiffre plågar Bond på ett sällsynt elakt sätt. Den scenen ska vara med i filmmanuset, har det sagts.

14 oktober 2005 tillkännagavs det att Daniel Craig, 37, hade fått rollen som James Bond i Casino Royale. Craig anlände till presskonferensen med båt på Themsen i bästa Bondstil.
Craig hade gradvis seglat fram som en allt tydligare kandidat till rollen när andra namn föll bort. Ändå sågs valet av honom som en liten överraskning i media.
Brittiska tidningar var hårda mot Craig redan från första början, innan någon scen till filmen hade börjat spelas in. Många skribenter hade kanske svårt att smälta att deras favorit Clive Owen inte skulle bli den nye 007.

Av kostnadsskäl valde Eon att spela in det mesta av filmens interiörscener i Barrandov-studion i Prag. Endast ett mindre antal scener spelas in i brittiska Pinewood.
Inspelningsplatser för Casino Royale var Tjeckien, Italien, Bahamas och Storbritannien. Sydafrika var länge en planerad inspelningsplats men landet byttes senare ut mot Bahamas.

Intresset för den nya Bondfilmen och för den nye 007 Daniel Craig är mycket stort. Det har startats webbkampanjer både för och emot Craig, långt innan filmen eller ens trailern kommit ut.
I början av maj släppte filmbolaget förhandstrailern till filmen, efter mycket spekulationer. Den emottogs mycket positivt av fansen.

Eon Productions held a press conference today at Barrandov Studios where director Martin Campbell announced that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (King Arthur) will play the main villain Le Chiffre, putting to rest at least one of the Casino Royale casting questions.

As for the more burning question of who will play the Bond girl, Campbell revealed the choice is now down to "two or three" but added "you'll just have to wait to find out." Eva Green and Olivia Wilde are reported to be the finalists.

New James Bond Daniel Craig, perhaps thinking of the frayed nerves caused by starting the $100 million-plus shoot without a love interest, assured that the shoot is progressing anyway: "We haven't got there so it's all fine."

True to form, one journalist from the Czech magazine Spy asked Craig what he thought of media speculation about his "orientation." After a moment, Craig responded icily, "I didn't know they had but thanks for the information."

Another local reporter got off to an interesting start by asking the assembled group, Craig, Campbell, Judi Dench and producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, if they were aware there was a previous Casino Royale.

På fredag 14/10 presenterades den sjätte skådespelaren i raden att spela James Bond i Eons filmserie : Daniel Craig, 37. Craig har under en tid tillhört de mest nämnda skådespelarna som varit aktuella för rollen men det var alltså först nu som det hela blev officiellt. Craig anlände till presskonferensen ombord på HMS President i bästa Bondstil - via racerbåt.
Craig har tecknat ett kontrakt på tre Bondfilmer av vilka 2006 års "Casino Royale" blir den första.
En kul detalj är att Daniel Craigs mor inte kunde hålla tyst om sonens nya roll utan avslöjade det hela till lokalbladet Liverpool Daily News i förväg.

Screenwriter Paul Haggis speaks of James Bond Begins concept for Casino Royale

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Paul Haggis, who joined Casino Royale production last month to polish the script, has spoken briefly to the Hollywood Reporter about his work on the film and the prospect of a younger James Bond 007.

The trade paper said that whilst in Toronto, "Haggis returned to his hotel room to work on his polish of the 21st James Bond film, "Casino Royale." "It's going to be good," he says. "We're trying to reinvent Bond. He's 28: no Q, no gadgets."

This confirms earlier reports that the producers and director Martin Campbell wanted "Casino Royale" to follow a "Bond Begins" concept, much like the recently rejuvenated Batman franchise.

Long-term Bond fans may recall that Michael G. Wilson wanted to take 007 back to his early career after Roger Moore's tenure as Bond was over in 1985, but producer Cubby Broccoli decided to stick with the tried and tested formula and hired Timothy Dalton to star in "The Living Daylights". Twenty years on and now a co-producer, Wilson is trying out the concept again.

This clashes with the studio, who want Pierce Brosnan to return for a fifth time and a guaranteed box-office success. Sony have asked Brosnan to come back, but the four-times 007 said that the invitation has to come from the producers.

The search for an actor to play a younger Bond is proving difficult, with neither party finding common ground on any of the contenders. With the start date of principal photography looming in January, a decision one way or another is needed soon to avoid a significant delay in production.

Location for production of Casino Royale - the 21st James Bond film - would be heading to an island of the east coast of the USA.

Today  can reveal more information on the precise location. Scouting is taking place on various islands in the Caribbean by director Michael Campbell - now working on the film full time after completing work on "Legend Of Zorro".

A major filming location is expected to be based in Bermuda.

The Bahamas has been a popular place for 007, first with Ian Fleming's novels, and then with the filming of "Thunderball", "The Spy Who Loved Me", "For Your Eyes Only" and "Licence To Kill". Nearby Cuba has been used as a location in two Pierce Brosnan films, "GoldenEye" and "Die Anoher Day".

Pre-production is still on schedule despite the shift from the planned location of South Africa and the lack of an official announcement on the casting of 007.

Expecting someone else? As the saying goes in Bond-lore, "never say never"!

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the James Bond films, and MGM announced today that Martin Campbell will direct CASINO ROYALE, the 21st film in the 007 franchise.

This is Campbell's second time as helmer of a James Bond film. In 1995 he directed the hit GOLDENEYE which introduced Pierce Brosnan to the role of 007 with great success.

Wilson and Broccoli said:
"We are thrilled that Martin has accepted our offer to direct CASINO ROYALE. He is an extremely talented director and we believe he will help take our films in a new and exciting direction. He is currently finishing filming 'Legend Of Zorro', the sequel to 'The Mask Of Zorro', and will be joining EON Productions shortly to work on the development of the script with our writers, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade."

MGM Vice Chairman and COO Chris McGurk said:
"Martin is an incredibly exciting filmmaker. GOLDENEYE was a wonderful movie and helped reinvigorate the Bond franchise. We're thrilled to have him back to direct the newest Bond."

Born in New Zealand, Campbell moved to England in 1966 and made his directorial debut on the popular TV series' 'The Professionals' and 'Minder'. He moved to America in 1986 to direct 'Criminal Law' and 'Defenceless'. Following GOLDENEYE, he went on to direct 'The Mask Of Zorro', 'Vertical Limit' and 'Beyond Borders' and is currently directing 'Legend Of Zorro'.

CASINO ROYALE will be released in 2006 and distributed world-wide by MGM. No decision has yet been made regarding casting for the role of 'James Bond'.

Casino Royale was first adapted in 1954 as a one-hour TV teleplay by CBS with American Barry Nelson playing the screen's first 007. Because Fleming had already sold the film rights to his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale was not part of the 1961 Cubby Broccoli/Harry Saltzman film rights purchase deal that was the foundation of the James Bond/Eon Productions franchise.

The rights passed from hand to hand until Charles K. Feldman announced he’d produce a rival Bond film to the Eon series. But this was at the height of Bondmania, and Feldman decided he couldn’t compete with Sean Connery, so in 1967 he and Columbia Pictures turned Casino Royale into a farce comedy starring David Niven and Peter Sellers. (Kaleidoscope, an excellent thriller made in 1966, used plot elements so strikingly similar to Casino Royale that it could almost be called an unofficial adaptation.)

Fast forward to the late 1990s when Sony (who acquired the Casino rights when they purchased Columbia Pictures) locked horns with MGM over disputed rights to the Bond film Thunderball. The settlement in favour of MGM not only returned the Thunderball rights to Eon, but Sony also surrendered their long-held rights to Casino Royale. This alowed Eon to finally adapt this first Fleming novel.

Ursula is best known for sexily emerging from the sea in 1962 Bond film "Dr No" – and is still loved by men more than 40 years later.

Bundchen denied rumours she'd been invited to play the love interest in the next James Bond film, following an appearance at Rio Fashion, a weeklong fashion event that showcases the autumn/winter collections of local designers.

"I never received that invitation (for the Bond film). You know what happens? I'm a very boring person. I work a lot, I go from home from work, I eat dinner, sleep. I don't take drugs, I'm not scandalous. So people have to start inventing things about me to publish in the columns," Bundchen told reporters during a brief press conference following the fashion show late on Friday night.



Bundchen also said she plans to promote events in New York next month to raise money for tsunami victims in Asia. She said she will organise a charity bowling event, and will ask fellow models to donate clothes for an auction.

"I'm concerned with social causes," she was quoted by the Estado news agency. "I will donate a lot of money."

It was Bundchen's first appearance at Rio Fashion, an event that she had passed over for years preferring instead to parade in Sao Paulo, where the fashion industry is more established and the designers are considered more serious.



Bundchen, who paraded for the Brazilian label Colcci, did leave open the possibility of participating in other film projects.

"I've read some scripts, but nothing is certain in the film industry. I don't want to be a professional actress, but I like to experiment," she said.

While visiting Rio, Bundchen taped a brief appearance in one of the local telenovelas.
