(Dame) Judi Dench playing M
Born in York, England on 9th December 1934
Starred In Goldeneye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002)
M played by Judi Dench appears in four James Bond films from Goldeneye up to and including Die Another Day. In Goldeneye M asserts her authority over Bond, especially when he tells her that she is a bean counter, who is only interested in her numbers.
Tomorrow Never Dies sees M present at a technological communications centre, where Bond is feeding back live information from his mission to a video screen. M later argues with Admiral Roebuck in relation to his hawkish impatient methods and convinces him to give her fourty-eight hours to investigate before sending the British fleet to China. M later appears in a police-escorted car along with Miss Moneypenny who discusses the mission with Bond.
The World Is Not Enough finally sees M involved in an extended role. Initially giving Bond a briefing at MI6, and then at headquarters in Scotland, M becomes a pivotal character in the plot. After travelling to Turkey to assist in the protection of Elektra King, M is kidnapped and held hostage. However M manages to use a battery out of a clock to power the tracking device in a nuclear warhead locator card, thus allowing Bond to track her, and Elektra's location.
After being released from a North Korean prison when he is suspected of leaking government secrets in Die Another Day, M coldly tells Bond that he is no use to anyone now and proceeds to revoke his 00 status. The situation has improved slightly when M meets Bond in the underground tube station, although the atmosphere is still icy, but slowly thawing. M is clearly relived at the end of the film, when she feels she can trust her top agent once more.
For the first time since Dr. No, a female actress now plays the character of M. Initially unsure about the new M, Bond soon finds out that his boss is now as formal as ever. In Goldeneye there is serious tension between M and Bond. After Bond tells her what he thinks of her, M gets straight to the point by telling Bond that he is a “relic of the cold war” and whose “boyish charms” won't cut it with her. As the films progress, M becomes slightly more informal with Bond, after developing an understanding of each other. Unusually M actually tells Bond that he should rekindle his relationship with Paris Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies to “pump her for information.”
It is in The World Is Not Enough that M reveals to Elektra King that while she would never tell it to his face, Bond is her best agent. The film also allows the character of M to develop more fully, especially becoming more involved with the plot, revealing M's talents as a field agent when she is held captive. M is clearly disappointed with Bond in Die Another Day, when she is lead to believe that Bond has been disclosing government secrets. Able to put her feelings aside, she projects a very formal cold demeanour towards Bond.
